2 times a loser August 30, 2010 Doris A. Daugherty I bought the Panasonic DVD Recorder DMR-EZ28 because I have a Panasonic VCR/DVR in the bedroom and wanted a DVD Recorder in the living room that would be compatible. It worked great, the first week. When I programed the DMR-EZ28 for the second week, everything was fine. About 2 hours after the first weekly recording finished, U99 was displayed. I followed the directions in the troubleshooting guide, they didn't work. I unplugged the unit for 30 minutes, plugged it back in to a different outlet and it didn't work. All I could do was turn it off and on and the U99 was displayed. I called Panasonic they could not help me. I returned the Recorder, ordered the same Recorder and expierenced the same problem. I couldn't even get the tray to open. My main question is why did it record if there was a problem? As far as ease of use and quality of recordings, all of it was great, until the second week.
Recording August 28, 2010 Cat mommy (New England, USA) This DVD recorder is a nice little machine. It works quite a bit like the old VCRs. Easy to use and set up. I do notice, that I seem to need to increase the volume more than just watching TV. It also takes a few seconds from the time I turn it on to the time it's ready to open and accept a disk. It also takes a few seconds to read the disk before playing also. All in all. This machine has done everything I need it to do. I'm pleased with it.
excellent picture but disappointing software August 22, 2010 curly I purchased this unit to replace a failed DMR-ES15. The ES15 has the old analog tv tuner so I didn't think it was worth fixing. I was anxious to get the DMR-EZ28K because I thought it would be the next step beyond all the great features Panasonic designed into the ES15.
Although the DMR-EZ28K has great video, the editing features have taken a giant step backwards (e.g. the phrase list that was such a great timesaver on the ES15 is missing from the EZ28, meaning you have to do editing from scratch each time you record). This was a great feature on the DS15 because you could easily keep track of sequential disc numbering, favorite show names (just add episode number), etc. Like having a bunch of clipboards.
Unlike the ES15, you can't even cursor back to edit (the cursor overwrites with blanks).
The preview window for the menu title text is also gone, so you can't tell where your text string is going to wrap (so unless you manually count the characters, it will usually wrap in the middle of a word (ugly)).
I can't get any of my previously-recorded DVD+RWs to play on the EZ28 (tried on my PCs, they played fine) so I will have to get an additional DVD player if I want to continue to use them in my living room. Looks like I'll have to stick to DVD+R & DVD-RAM on the EZ28.
One caution about using DVD-RAMs on the EZ28: You will need to re-format each DVD-RAM disc on the EZ28 before using it (even if it was previously formatted on a Panasonic recorder like the ES15). If you don't, be prepared for a great deal of aggravation. I learned this the hard way.
There are more issues (e.g. slow tuner), but the above are enough for now (I've only had the unit a few days). I am hoping that Panasonic will issue a firmware upgrade (you have to burn a CD from a download at Panasonic's site) to fix all this mess. I know that Panasonic has made great products in the past, it's hard for me to believe they would unload junk on their customers.
Keep in mind the EZ28 has great video. In fact, the 4-hour record mode is so good, it's hard to distinguish from 2-hour mode (doubling your storage space). If you can put up with the limitations listed above (assuming the unit will last) you will be happy with this DVD recorder.
In a nutshell: wonderful hardware with unfinished software (Panasonic, do the right thing and give us an upgrade to make the EZ28 user interface as good as the old ES15.)
Note: Downloaded & installed firmware upgrade version D2-377 (see no difference in operation).

dvd recorder review August 14, 2010 John Jones (Freehold New Jersey) I use the recorder every day to record a timer program and it works fine.I have had no problem with it so far.It was a good price and well worth it.I highly recomend it.Thank you.
Died after 5 months August 8, 2010 E. Fife (Owings Mills, MD) I've only had this DVD recorder for about five months, and it just died on me. It started showing a U99 error, which apparently is a death knell. After speaking to a multitude of morons with heavy accents at Panasonic tech support (I spoke with four different people because I was transferred to the wrong department, the call was disconnected, etc.), there was nothing they could do. I'm going to have to ship it to Texas, AT MY EXPENSE, where they will either fix it or replace it, at their discretion. That is because it's within its one-year warranty. But I'm not sure I will go through that.
This thing was never easy to use, never intuitive. The menus, the remote... it just stinks. Trust me when I say that this is just not a well-designed product, and the customer service experience wasn't even good. I initially purchased this item because it has a digital tuner, which means that I could record television signals from an antenna, with closed captions for the deafie in my home. I'm disappointed that it died so quickly, and it seems this U99 thing is common. I'm thinking I might just cut my losses and look into other brands.
